Shift Happens: India And China Are Booming. They Must Have Known.

This is a slideshow called Shift Happens. It sums up the "Western" naivety about the rise of India, China and other countries. I am from Europe, and I thought that I was quite aware… but if you read those numbers! WOW! Simply WOW! Just click through the slideshow.

I am actually curious how people from India or China look upon this presentation… You must have been aware… you must have known this for ages :) … or not?

Love to hear your point of view …

Experienced Project Managers Stop Learning

Today Better Projects posted an intriguing article debunking the myth of “experienced project managers can deal more effectively with complex software projects". They refer to a recent article in HBR magazine, “The Experience Trap”, that basically says that experienced project manager do not outperform less experienced PMs because they stopped learning.

Question For Software Project Management Academics

If you are a teacher or a lecturer (or a researcher) I have a question for you…

I am currently developing a part of my site where teachers and lecturers can post their materials (powerpoints, articles etc.).

First so they are available to their students, but also so universities and other institutions can share/exchange the material, and discuss research topics.

Of course the subjects should be related to project management or software development.

To give you an idea please look at http://edu.softwareprojects.org/

There will be no money involved.

If you are interested, please drop me a mail at .

Free Project Management Education - Subscribe To Feeds

Sometimes things are so obvious to me, that I forget that there are people around that might not know about it: in this case I am talking about the power of website feeds. This is how I keep my Project Management knowledge on the edge, this is the way how I educate myself on my profession… And the best part of it… It's all free.

More and more websites about Project Management are publishing their content in a so-called RSS feed. This is just a small xml stream that allows an application to get the articles and display them to a reader. The best part of this is that a reader can handle thousands of website feeds, so you only have to look at your reader and you will have the latest information available. No more surfing around!

Last summer I really changed the speed of learning on Project Management. I started using Google Reader to read almost a hundred blogs and other websites. Every morning I log into the free reader and I can read all the articles about Project Management, just like a newspaper. Heck, better than my newspaper!

For me it was an eye opener…!

If you don't use Google Reader yet, open a free account

Your reader will first be empty, you have to subscribe to website feeds. You do this by entering a feed address.

My feed is: http://feeds.feedburner.com/projectshrink

Every website that displays this image has a feed. Just enter the website address in the subscribe box, and you will be fine.

I publish the best articles I find on other blogs about Project Management. You can also subscribe to that feed, so you only get the best of the best :)

The address for that feed is: http://www.softwareprojects.org/reader

Explaining PM Approaches

globe.jpg

Some weeks ago I had to introduce new IT employees into the magical world of Project Management methods. These guys were completely new to the industry, so references to "real project life" were not going to save me (like it normally does :)).

I finally came up with the following start to kick of the training. It broke the ice and it worked very well. So if you are looking for an opener for your presentation, this might help you out.

The application that I used was "Google Earth" . BTW That looks great on big screens :) I used the zoom and slide function to talk about how methods limit your view, how you can choose to watch details, or how you can go for a global perspective. But using one limits you. So be aware of the level that is under attention.
