Projects Are About Humans. Now Deal With That!

Project Animals: The Deadly Basset

I was brainstorming for some ideas to keep me busy the next few months (only got a gazillion ideas, currently prioritizing them :)), and I came up with an idea that I used for my first blogging experience… yep, it was still 2004, and I had this illusive idea to compare project people with animals… below the only entry that came out of that brainwave…

One moment of sleep, of not paying attention and you are dead meat. It is a real deadline sniper… the sky is blue, the sun is shining, and you have commitment on your hands before you know it.

I'm talking about the Basset Hound a.k.a The Basset.

"You agree that we have to got the highest quality possible, don't you."
"Uhu", the Project Manager nods, his head barely up, at the end of the meeting from Hell.
"To ensure good testing we have to have the legacy systems data converted, and up and running within our new system when we test."
"Hmmmm, uhu."
"Great. Next item."

Playing this scene back in your head later on, it hits you. You have a new deadline. Data conversion should be ready before testing. When is testing planned? Shoot, in two weeks. The Basset did it again.

He looks harmless. He looks pretty cute, adorable even, the true gentleman. In a moment of mental absence he hit you with a new deadline.

Well, no harm done. Let's call him up, and roll it back.

And now you find out while we call him The Basset. These dogs don't listen. If they lay down on the floor (as they do almost the entire day), there is no way to move them.

"No sorry, I already communicated this within the organization. Plans are made, people are booked. You said it was ok, didn't you?"
"Uhu."

What animal does your customer resemble? What does your boss look like?

This is an interesting reading. People have used animals in different occasions. The bull and bear market, the butterfly effect and the flying geeze growth model. These are exemplary examples.

yeah, and I just keep on referring to management meetings as Baboon Hill… you know, showing off your butt to see who has the most red one :)

For your information some people in Russia are born with blue mark on their butts(It is true). How about introducing another theme in emulation of the animal theme: a color-based management system?

    I corrected two spelling mistakes
